The Jesus Mission

Over the last 18 months at COMMUNITY we have made strategic moves in order to mobilize all (yes, we mean ALL) our people for mission.  Part of that process has been to clearly articulate in a simple way our mission and how we will carry it out.  The mission is "helping people find thier way back to God" and the way we will accomplish it is throug the 3 R's. What is below is the script from a voice over I did for a video to explain in a concise way the Jesus mission at COMMUNITY.

MISSION:  At COMMUNITY we have accepted the mission of Jesus and simply say it like this: "helping people find their way back to God."  This mission is made up of three tasks:

REACH.  First, we must reach people far from God. The Western Church is observing a dramatic shift from a Christian culture to a post-Christian one.  It is now suggested that 60% of the people we want to reach will never enter the doors of our current forms of church.  If that is true, we then need to allow our imaginations to be profoundly shaped by the biblical notion that God is sending us as He sent Himself in Jesus.  Matthew 28 says to "Go!" and we are challenging ourselves to be the church who will reach people who are far from God.

RESTORE.  We must also restore God's dream for the world. A common perception among pre-Christians is that Christ-followers talk about poverty and justice issues, but that we don't do much to address those issues.  But Jesus expects us to change that perception.  "He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free."  (Luke 4:17-18) It is our mission to be a people who restore God's dream for the world.

REPRODUCE.  We must then reproduce the mission in others. If we are called to go to "Jerusalem...Judea...Samaria... and to the ends of the earth," we have to find a new way of counting that results in rapid reproduction and exponential growth.  This new math counts on you and your friends to start a missional church movement.  Every movement starts with one person.  When you and your friends follow the biblical example to become apprentices of Jesus, (2 Timothy 2:2) the result can be the beginning of a missional church movement.  Through these apprenticeships, we will reproduce the mission in others.

That’s the Jesus Mission. Now go.

How To Teach Doctrine - The Story of Everything

This past weekend we wrapped up one of the most powerful series ever at COMMUNITY, The Story of Everything.  I knew that this was a very important series since we were teaching the basics of what we believe, but I had no idea how well it would be received.  It was amazing!  Here are a couple comments that I just received via e-mail:  "This series has answered questions that I have been asking for the past 25 years..."  Here is another:  "We just joined a small group and The Story of Everything  has given us so much to share with each other.  You guys have done a wonderful job in giving us explanation, meaning and insight to the Story and its Truth.  Thank you."

After finishing this series, here are some thoughts on how to teach doctrine:

1. Doctrine should be taught as relational. One of the big mistakes we make is presenting doctrine as only a proposition or a statement.  Doctrine comes from theology and at the core of good theology is a God who is in love with us -that's relational.
2. Doctrine should be taught as a narrative.  We often present doctrine as an abstract statement that exists outside of time and history.  Doctrine comes from good theology which is the re-telling of the love story between God and man.
3. Doctrine should be interesting.  When you present sound doctrine based on a theology that is relational and narrative people will engage.  I remember a guy telling me when I did an internship, "it is a sin to make the Bible boring."  We had record attendance at COMMUNITY during this series.
4. Doctrine makes for great discussion.  During this series we also created a DVD curriculum for our small groups.  We had record numbers of people in small groups during this series and I know in my small group we had some great discussions.

Theologically Right and Relationally Wrong

This past weekend we continued our series on Life's Toughest Questions.  We let the people of Community submit questions on our website and create the series.  It has been a truly great series so far! 

This week the question was, "What does God have to say about homosexuality?" That is a tough question.  I don't think it's nearly as tough a theological question as it is a relationally tough question.  The research amongst 16-29 year-olds who don't go to church in the best-seller UnChristian concluded, “When you identify yourself as a Christian to a friend, neighbor, or business associate, you might as well have tattooed on your arm: anti-homosexual, gay-hater, homophobic.” That tells me that the church of Jesus has too often been theologically right and relationally wrong.  

My biggest concern going into this weekend is that we would sound like we had all the answers but had no interest in trying to serve and love people who are a part of the gay and lesbian community.  Over and over again in scripture and in the person of Jesus it is clear that God wants to be not just morally right or theologically right, but also relationally right.  And if the church of Jesus wants to see God's Dream accomplished on this planet we can no longer be theologically right and relationally wrong.

Tim Keller... on being brilliant!

I've been fortunate enough to get to meet and even know a lot of the people that I really admire who are in the ministry.  But one of the people I have never met and really admire is Tim Keller. I admire the church that he leads - Redeemer; I admire his commitment to church planting and I admire how smart he is!  (And I plan on connecting with him at the Exponential Conference - don't miss it!)  I had a chance to meet him last week for dinner, but it was last minute and I already had stuff planned.  Ugh!  However, here is an interview with Tim in First Things where he talks about his new book (The Reason For God, which I just ordered and it is currently #18 on the New York Times bestseller list), C.S. Lewis, "seeker churches" and being a Presbyterian.  Check it out.

Two Stats, One Mission - The Jesus Mission!

If the world were a village of 100 people, 67 of those people would. not know the good news and grace of Jesus Christ.  If the world were a village of 100 people, 20 of those people would live on less than a dollar a day.  The mission of Jesus is to change all that!

In a previous generation we had the fight over whether the good news of Jesus was to "seek and save the lost" or to "to bring good news to the poor".  The answer is both.  Those of us that want to see people become Christ Followers and go to Heaven forever do not have to be afraid of a "social gospel".  And those of us who want to be the hands and feet of Jesus to the least of these do not have to be afraid of only "saving souls."  Jesus had one mission and he came to do both!

The mission of Jesus is to reach the 67 and the 20.  Two stats, one mission!

Dream of God

Over the last couple weeks I've been reading N.T. Wright's Simply Christian a few pages at a time before I go to bed.  It is outstanding.  What surprised me is how his writing reminds me of CCC's Dream of God.  A few years ago our team wrote a narrative that describes what God dreams about.  I realized that I've never posted it on my blog and I thought you might find it inspiring.  Here is what we believe is the Dream of God:

God has a dream; it is a dream that He has had for all of eternity.  It is the dream of a people whose hearts beat with a passion for “Helping People Find Their Way Back to Him.”  Their presence enters the community as freshness; like the first fragrance of spring at the close of winter. The breath of new life; new beginnings and the promise of what’s to come fill the air. They bring a message of hope through Jesus Christ inspires of truth and joy. When they gather it is to experience and celebrate the mystery of their oneness in Jesus Christ. Together they are His body – the very physical presence of Christ on earth. They celebrate and embrace God’s eternal plan for the church to be the hope of the entire world. God has a dream.

God dreams of a people whose heart beat reverberates through neighborhoods, cities and countries stirring an awakening in hearts and souls. Christ followers, those close to God connect with those far from God in groups where the language of “we” replaces “me.” Inside these groups it’s safe to risk, to be vulnerable, and share life deeply. They are marked by a radical kind of faith, hope and love; the marks of Jesus Christ and His followers. Transformation takes place as groups empower us to more fully obey Christ together than alone. Neighborhoods become places where the word “lonely” doesn't’t exist; where a smile replaces suspicion, security replaces fear, and Jesus is a holy name on lips. Community becomes a life changing experience, not simply a location. God has a dream.

God dreams of a people whose hearts beat with such compassion that no need goes unmet. The One who has freely given His life calls His own to give freely in return. These Christ followers hold all things loosely and love opens their hands. In this supernatural economy, the greatest return is in the giving and nothing is held back. Personal contribution becomes a path to obedience, fulfillment, unity and joy. The young invest in the aging and the aging contribute to shape the generations of the future.  Generosity replaces self-centeredness as compassion calls us to take risks. With a contagious and passionate desire they contribute to the dream of God to meet the needs of all He loves.  God has a dream...

Just When You Think, "I Don't Have Enough To Give."

Ever think to yourself, "I don't have enough to give"?  Hang with me and just keep reading...

The last couple weeks we have been challenging all of Community Christian Church to give above and beyond to our NEXT mission that we believe will allow us to reach the next 5,000 people. In the coming weeks we will all be making pledges to the NEXT mission.  Sue and I have given more than a tithe to CCC for a long time and we also give to other causes.  So when it came to the NEXT mission at times I've thought, "I don't have enough to give." 

Then I get a letter and a photo from my friend Faustin (the guy on the right in the photo) who lives in Rwanda.  Faustin, his wife Antoinette, their baby and Faustin's three younger brothers all lived on less than $100/year. They are the poorest of the poor.  It was through Global Family Rescue that we started financially supporting Faustin and his family with $59/month. The letter he sent me said thanks for visiting them this last summer, the gifts we brought them and thanks for how our support has transformed their life.  But here is the kicker - Faustin wanted me to know that he took one of his baby goats and he gave it away to Eric (the guy on the left in the photo) who has even less than him.  The photo is of Faustin, Eric and the goat that he gave away.  Faustin is a follower of Jesus and said he did this because Jesus told us, "freely you have received, now freely give" (Matthew 10:18). So, while making more than 95% of the people on the planet (and so do you!) I'm thinking, "I don't have enough to give".  But Faustin  who is still living on far less than $1000/year is looking for ways to be more generous and give back.  When I was in Rwanda Faustin taught me about contentment and now he is teaching me about generosity.  I think I have enough.  I've got more than enough.  I have enough to give some away.  I have enough to give lots away.  How about you?

Christianity is Going East and Islam is Coming to the West

A couple fascinating articles in the August 28th edition of Time Magazine that I thought you might want to check out.  The first article:  The War For China's Soul tells about the spread of Christianity in east and how the church is being persecuted.  I have a friend who just got back from spending the summer in China and I'm anxious to see if the article is accurate to his experience.  The other article is Allah's Recruits and is about the spread of Islam in the west and in many cases as extreme Islam.  If I assume that Time wasn't just being politically correct by putting both articles in the same issue and that is it equally true that Islam is coming west and Christianity is going east; then how should the missional church of Jesus Christ respond?  Strategies?

U2's Bono On Celebrity, Jesus, Africa and More

For the fifth year in a row CCC is hosting a site for the Leadership Summit.  Every year the Willow Creek Association does the a great job of bringing in the best of the best on the topic of leadership.  And one of the highlights of this year was an interview with Bono of U2.  If I still have heroes I think Bono is one of them.  I've seen U2 in concert three times and each time it was like a worship experience and Bono was the worship leader.  He is absolutely the most engaging and charismatic performer I have ever seen.  Crowds of thousands literally hang on his every word and gesture.  It's an amazing gift.  Perhaps even more amazing than his concert performance was his interview with Bill Hybels that covered everything from celebrity to Jesus to Africa and more.  The following are just a few of the quotes from the interview (I was typing as fast as I could so they are probably 95% accurate).  If you saw the interview or are moved by any of the following I would love to hear your comments.  I now give you Bono...

• "The most rewarding part of this past year?  Selfishly, it is to wake up with a melody in my head and heart.  But beyond my music it is the work we are doing with the ONE campaign."

Playing It Safe Can Be Risky

I found this picture at Creating Passionate Users and thought , "what a great reminder to the church that it can be sooo risky playing it safe!"  The guy in red was rock climbing (the risky thing) while his parked car (the safe thing) was demolished by a gigantic boulder.  The temptation for churches to play it safe is oh so powerful, but in many circumstances, oh so dangerous.

Remember the Masters reaction in Matthew 25 to the servant who played it safe?  Here it is: "The master was furious. 'That's a terrible way to live! It's criminal to live cautiously like that! If you knew I was after the best, why did you do less than the least? The least you could have done would have been to invest the sum with the bankers, where at least I would have gotten a little interest.   "'Take the thousand and give it to the one who risked the most. And get rid of this "play-it-safe" who won't go out on a limb. Throw him out into utter darkness.'

I Belong In Chicago.

I was still thinking about my trip to Rwanda so I went over to the Global Family Rescue blog and read Melody's most recent post , I Guess I'm Really In Africa.  It's funny but scary; she tells how yesterday her boys found a deadly green mamba in the front yard.  Yikes!  That doesn't really make me want to live in Africa, but it didn't influence my response to what I have been thinking lately - and that is this:   I am in the right spot at the right time for right now.  I belong in Chicago. 

Every time I take a trip to a new place or go visit a new church plant - whether it is Kigali, Rwanda or New York City I find myself wondering, "maybe I should live and serve here."  As those questions came flooding into my mind, the response came like an outgoing tide, "You belong right where you are".  Why do I belong here? 

• God has me in a place that fits my gift mix - Leading Community Christian Church and NewThing totally fit who I am.  I'm a spiritual entrepreneur with a love for leading and starting new stuff that "helps people find their way back to God".  I can best leverage who I am for right now by being right here.
• "Dave, without CCC, there is no GFR" - That was one of the last things that Ben Pahlow, President of GFR said to me before I left Rwanda.  He was talking about CCC's ongoing challenge to every person to be on mission with God and to ask, "What next God?"  He was talking about the $400k-$500k that CCC attenders will give to GFR families in Rwanda over the next 3 years.  I need to be influencing people with influence right here.
• Chicago is my hometown - I grew up in the Chicago area.  I love Chicago (the White Sox part, not the Cub part).  I fit in Chicago.  I connect with people from Chicago.  And Chicago is one of the most influential cities in the most influential country in the world.  I need to be right here, right now.

If God wants to me go, I will go!  But until God has a better place for me I am in the right spot at the right time for right now.  And it has nothing to do with snakes.

Poverty and Contentment

Take a look at this picture.  My new friend Faustin makes less than $100/month and has all his life (and that includes the support we now send him every month).  He lives in a two bedroom mud house with dirt floor, no electricity and none of the modern convenience that most of us in the States take for granted.  And I'm not talking about microwave or dishwasher; I'm talking about a fork, knife and spoon - he doesn't have it.  Faustin mother died when he was very young; his father was shot in the genocide and he was left to raise his four brothers at the age of 14.  He knows what it is like to beg for food; he knows what it is like to see his first two children die before the age of two and he knows what it is like to be the poorest of the poor. 

But when I saw Faustin holding his new born baby boy (like in the picture) - I'm telling you he was content!  Look at the grin on his face - that is one happy Dad!  He seemed to really have everything he needed.  It was the perfect example of what Paul said, "I have learned to be content in whatever circumstance."  I have to admit that I was surprised.  I assumed that anyone that poor must be discontent. 

My assumption was that poverty and discontentment always go together.  That assumption led me to believe that my role as a Christian from the United States was two-fold 1) end his extreme poverty and to 2) bring him contentment.  My support helped him in his battle against poverty but Faustin is a follower of Jesus and he already has contentment. 

Today I remembered Mother Teresa once said, "the poverty in the United States is far worse than that in the streets of Calcutta, because it is a poverty of the soul." In the couple hours that I spent with Faustin and his family I almost forget that they were poor.  Why?  I think it is because they are content.  And we believe that it is impossible to be poor and still be content - but they are.

So, my role as a Christian from the United States is to help end Faustin's extreme physical poverty and Faustin's role as a Christian from Rwanda is to help end my "poverty of the soul" and show me how to "learn to be content in whatever circumstance." 

Good Food & Great Conversation with Neil Cole and Larry Osborne

Just got back from San Jose, California after doing the CCN broadcast on Multiplying Ministry. Great topic!  The whole experience was pretty cool - getting to meet George Barna who was the host; and doing the show with Neil Cole and Larry Osborne. Good guys!  Barna said there was between 10,000 and 15,000 leaders watching the show live.  He is a pollster, but I'm still having a hard time believing that many people tuned in.

However, the highlight was going out to dinner the night before with Neil and Larry at Alexanders Steak House.  The food was awesome!  Their website is the most delicious website I've ever seen!

In addition to the good food was the great conversation!  I took the opportunity to ask Neil some questions since he has pioneered a movement of house churches that now number over 800 and 10,000 participants and literally wrote the book on the Organic Church.  Neil has been openly critical of the mega church.  His criticisms come because he does not see it as reproducible and as a way to create a movement.  Since we technically fall into the category of a mega church I wanted to know what he would like to see change with most mega churches.  Here are a couple of my questions and his answers (paraphrased).

Dave: If you had a magic wand and could change one thing about the mega church in North America what would you change?

Neil:  I would want to change the dysfunctional relationship between church and Pastor.  The church is the dependent and Pastor is the co-dependent.  The church depends on the Pastor (paid staff) to do too many things they need to be doing for themselves (serving, shepherding, teaching, evangelism, etc.).  And when the pastor enables the church by doing these things he gets praised from the church and that is how the cycle of dependency continues.  That is the one thing that I would change immediately.

Dave:  So, if you were a mega church pastor what you do first?

Neil:  I would teach people how to hear from God.  They are too pastor-dependent.  If every person who is a Christ Follower was hearing from God then we would see a movement.

I think he is right about some mega churches having dysfunctional relationships with their pastor.  However, I don't think that is unique to large churches. (I think Neil would agree with me.)  Churches of all sizes have this issue.  In fact, smaller churches may struggle with this even more and that may be why they continue to be small.  And he is absolutely right about hearing from God being the beginning point.  That is so simple and obvious, but so right on!  I love his stuff. He talks about the reproducing church unlike anyone else; and he is getting it done! I'm not completely on board with all his application, because it's all about the house church.  But he asks all the right questions.  Good food and great conversation.

Good News in the News.

John Kass, the Chicago Tribune's #1 columnist wrote a great piece in Sundays Tribune, "No Doubt About Easters True Meaning".  He takes a shot at the Da Vinici Code, the recent publicity about the gospel of Judas and the media's reluctance to talk about spiritual matters.  He ends the article with: "This year is no different. Next year there will be something else. That much is certain. It's been that way for almost 2,000 years. It's always the same, and it goes like this:  A group of strong men rolled the rock away from the tomb, the Resurrection didn't happen, and it defies scientific reason, which is the new church to many.  But in countless other churches, in storefronts and cathedrals, there is a response to such doubt. It comes from the Last Supper, when Christ speaks to his disciples and says: 'I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.'  For those of you who celebrate today, happy Easter."

How-To Preaching on PreachingToday.com

PreachingToday.com has the posted and e-mailed the second part of the three part interview that Colin Smith of Arlington Heights Evangelical Free Church and myself did on How-To Preaching. The forum is titled, "If It Is Not How-To, It's Not Preaching".  They had us meet in a studio in Carol Stream and just talk for about an hour on the topic.  I did prep myself with a quick conversation with Tim Sutherland but other than that I just kind of said whatever came to mind.  I don't really consider myself an expert on the art of preaching, but I thought this interview turned out pretty good.  I guess when you do something long enough and hang out with the right people long enough you learn a thing or two. 

The Cost of Nondiscipleship

There have been different seasons in my life where I would commit scripture to memory.  But there is only one time in my life that I actually committed something other than scripture to memory.  The sole time I memorized something that was not in the Bible came from Dallas Willard and it is a warning about nondiscipleship.  He succinctly reminds us that while there is cost to discipleship (thank you Dietrich Bonhoeffer) there is also a cost to nondiscipleship. 

Read it slow.  Read it at least three times.  Let it sink in.

"Nondiscipleship costs abiding peace, a life penetrated throughout by love, faith that sees everything in the light of God's overriding governance for good, hopefulness that stands firm in the most discouraging of circumstances, power to do what is right and withstand the forces of evil. In short, it costs exactly that abundance of life that Jesus said He came to bring."

                                     I did an interview with Brian Larson of Preaching Today a little while back on "How-To Preaching".  I never really considered what we do at Community Christian Church and in our NewThing Network to be "how-to" preaching.  On the other hand (as you can read in the interview) I can't imagine standing up in front of our church and not challenging people to better live out the Jesus mission.  The interview is with myself and Colin Smith, Senior Pastor of Arlington Heights Evangelical Church.  Here is the first of 3 parts to this interview titled, "If It's Not How-To, It's Not Preaching".  Check it out and tell me what you think.

Dr. B on Church & Community

I've been able to spend some time with Dr. Gilbert Bilezikian on a few occasions and several years back we had him speak at Community Christian Church.  He was Bill Hybels mentor and was an influential leader in the founding of Willow Creek Community Church.  I always find Dr. B interesting and I recommend two of his books, Community 101 and Beyond Sex Roles.  Thanks to Todd Rhoades I found a an interview with Bilezikian while he was speaking in New Zealand.  He says some interesting stuff about the future of the church, Willow Creek and his favorite topic - the church as the eternal community of God.  Take a read and tell me what you think.

Bilezikian says, “Christ did not die just to save us from our sins, but to bring us together into community. After coming to Christ, our next step is to be involved in community. A church that does not experience community is a parody, a sham. But the church in the West is being overtaken by individualism, which entails increased material pursuits, so you can afford to be self-sufficient. Strong anti-community forces are at work. Family life is practically non-existent as we are pulled away in different directions.”

Mr. Bilezikian fears the church has become irrelevant to both the purposes of God and to the needs of the world. “The bane of the church is that it becomes worldly. Instead of imparting the Word and becoming an agent of change, it adopts the values of the world and integrates them into its structures and life. “The biggest problem is the definition of its leadership structures. There are very clear directives in the New Testament for how the church is to be constituted, on the basis of community, which implies congregational participation, consensual decision-making, accountability of leaders to the congregation. Leadership should not be directive but developmental.”

However, Mr. Bilezikian says the church has discarded these directives and replaced them with worldly models of leadership, such as those found in corporate business. So we find the pastor as CEO. “We even adopt the language, for example, calling them senior pastors. Where does that come from?”  He says today’s highly hierarchical models of leadership smack of Government, military or political administrations and they result in the Church becoming institutionalized. “Instead of being a movement, it becomes an establishment. This is not new, of course - it started when the Roman Emperor Constantine established Christianity as the state religion.”

Mr. Bilezikian chooses his words carefully, but he is not without criticism of Willow Creek itself. “Willow Creek was on target originally,” he says, “but there’s always the temptation to seek success, as defined by the world, meaning preoccupation with numbers, with business, with facilities, and as a result there is always a danger for a church to become bureaucratic and hierarchical.” He says this temptation is the same, though, for a small church as for a large church. “The church becomes dominated by little bosses and instead of developing leadership they hog it for themselves and run the congregation like tyrants.”

While Mr. Bilezikian raises the warning flags, he is not without hope. He points to a community movement which, he says, appeared at the end of the 20th century and has taken hold. These are churches in which lay people and clergy are raising basic questions about the identity of the Church, and about the definition of its workings. “It seems the Holy Spirit is operating a kind of quiet revival which is primarily aimed at recovering the dynamics of the Church of the Book of Acts, which results in renewed incentives for outreach in a pagan world.”  Mr. Bilezikian has come in for strong criticism for his promotion of women in ministry. “There are some people who hate me for this,” he says. But he makes no apology for his stand.

“I don’t think there can be genuine community where there’s differentiation of rank, or class, or ethnicity and gender. This is not a case of bringing in any feminist agenda, but a case of concern for community. In fact, the feminist agenda is the opposite of what I am saying - it is a struggle for equal rights and equal power. I am convinced from scripture that relationships have nothing to do with rights and power.  They have to do with mutual submission and reciprocal servanthood at all levels of church life, and every role in the church,” Mr. Bilezikian says.

Ok, what do you think?  I love that last paragraph  It totally reminds me of something Tim Sutherland (CCC/Newthing teaching team leader) would say!

Bono's Best Sermon Yet

If you're wondering what I'm doing here, at a prayer breakfast, well, so am I. I'm certainly not here as a man of the cloth, unless that cloth is leather. It's certainly not because I'm a rock star. Which leaves one possible explanation: I'm here because I've got a messianic complex.  Yes, it's true. And for anyone who knows me, it's hardly a revelation.  Well, I'm the first to admit that there's something unnatural...something unseemly...about rock stars mounting the pulpit and preaching at presidents, and then disappearing to their villas in the south of France. Talk about a fish out of water. It was weird enough when Jesse Helms showed up at a U2 concert...but this is really weird, isn't it?  You know, one of the things I love about this country is its separation of church and state. Although I have to say: in inviting me here, both church and state have been separated from something else completely: their mind. Mr. President, are you sure about this?
