If you asked me, "Dave where should I look for a used car?" I'd say, "check out craigslist." And if you asked me "where can I find a hub cab for my '96 Nissan Maxima GXE?" I'd say, "check out craigslist." And if you asked me, "where can I find a drummer for my band this weekend?" Again I'd say, "check out craigslist." Seriously. I discovered that many of our Campus Arts Directors post ads on craigslist searching for band members and get lots of responses. Sam Menesses, who leads the arts at CCC-Pilsen has found over 30 artists thru craigslist. Tommy Bowman who leads the arts at a NewThing church in Kasas City has found more than 18 artists in just the first six months of the life of Restore Community Church. I was told that most of these artists are musicians who were in churches where they weren't being used or churches that didn't play the kind of music they like to play. So, looking for artists? Try an ad in craigslist.
We do this at our church Dave, and its a great idea! Thanks for sharing it.

This is true! It works... give it a try

While it may work and it may be a great idea, nobody has reservations about the fact that these musicians are being imported from other churches? While they may not like the music style or be "used" at their former church, perhaps they were serving in another way? Perhaps their family was serving in another way?
To entice them away from their current church simply for the sake of having a hot band makes me question the greatness of this idea.

I'm gonna have to say good idea.
1) We are ALL one church.
2) If they are not being "enticed" away from their church, it's a great way to plug them in.
3) If they are not being used at all at a church, even in other areas, this is a good way to utilize them.
4) When church A succeeds, so does Church B.

I was at a church for over 5 years where I couldn't use my bass playinig..they had no desire or need for it(2 keyboards and organ every week...) It's been so great to play again.
I might have considered playing once in awhile to help out another location, but there wasn't any option like that in my town, either!

I like the, "Whats good for Church A is good for Church B" comment. Though there are lines that we can cross and violate good ethics, it has always amazed me at how narrow-minded most of the Church has been in this regard. The power of the Church would be unleashed in a much larger way if we all truly understood, especially those in leadership, that Church B is a vital part of Church A; and that what's good for any part of the body of Christ is good for all of the Body. If the Church matures to the point of seeing and believing this, and acting on it, I am convinced we would see an explosion of growth across the Church universal. Leaders of churches should encourage their under-utilized talents to assist in any church that has need of them. Remember Sunday school anyone? Give and it shall be given back to you. We are all (I thought) fighting and working for the same goals.
