What's Next? The Reproducing Church

The following is an article I wrote for an upcoming issue of Willow News of the Willow Creek Assocation.  I had 400 words to describe what I believe is next for the church in North America and to hype the National New Church Conference (which everyone needs to attend!).  So, for you regular blog readers, you get this before it is published.  Lucky! (insert voice of Napoleon Dynamite)

What is next?  A new expression of church that is not defined by a denominational label, a particular model, size or even its’ unique theology.  These churches are now among the most influential churches and increasingly the churches that we hear from on major platforms.  These churches are relentlessly committed to being both incarnational and missional and are reproducing themselves wherever God gives the opportunity.  What is next?  The reproducing church.

The Reproducing Church Is about Culture, not Size.

The multi-site church has become the buzz word, but it’s really just one expression of the reproducing church. The reproducing church is seeing growth, development and reproduction at all levels; whether it has to do with reproducing leaders and artists at a micro level, or reproducing congregations, campuses, churches and even whole networks. It’s not merely about being a mega church or getting huge. If smaller churches have the right ethos and a missional culture, they will reproduce.  There is a new breed of church planters that no longer simply ask, “How can I plant a church, grow it and make a big impact?”  Instead these young leaders are asking, “How can I plant a church, grow it and make a big impact in multiple locations?”  It’s about taking who you are, regardless of size and reproducing the ethos of your church to accomplish the Jesus mission.

The Reproducing Church is about a new set of Values, not new Strategies.

By continually starting new things reproducing churches are always on the edge. Reproducing churches like it on the edge; because that is where innovation occurs.  As a result of living outside the safety of the familiar a new set of missional values are emerging.  Reproducing churches value the edge more than the center. The value is on the new more than the existing. The value becomes the lost and not the just the found. And I’m totally fine with that, as I would think Jesus might be. The Reproducing Church - this is what's next!

Catalyst Podcast II

I was thinking more about the podcast I did with Catalyst and I got all the usual questions about multi-site, the reproducing church and church planting.  But it was interesting to hear their observation and question about the Community Christian Church staff and our leadership culture.  So, here is my attempt at remembering the question they asked me and my response to that question.  See what you think?                                                                                                   

CATALYST:  Community Christian Church is known in many circles as having one of the healthiest church staffs in the country, which gives credibility to your team for creating a strong leadership culture in your church.  What are your secrets?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              

DAVE:  I'm not sure they are secrets but a few things come to mind when I think about the kind of leadership culture we have created.  The first thing that comes to mind is COMMUNITY.  It's kind of a buzz word right now but I think we have the genuine thing!  We really like working with each other; hanging out with each other and doing life with each other. We trust each other; we know everyone else has our back.  One of the guys on our team likes to call working at CCC "recess".  And it's true.  I seriously don't remember one time since we started this church looking at the clock and asking myself, "can I go home now?"  I think for most of us we don't know when the work ends and the play starts...our work is hard, but it is fun!  And a big reason that is true is because of the positive relationships and real friendships we have on our staff team.  Before we hire people we always make sure they pass the "parking lot test".  The "parking lot test" is whether I am excited when I drive into the parking lot and see their car.  If we are not excited that this person is here, they probably are not a fit on our team. The first reason for our healthy leadership culture is that it is built on genuine community.  The second reason we have a healthy leadership culture has to do with our CAUSE.  We are uncompromisingly committed to "helping people find their way back to God".  It's almost a paradox but I think we put the cause ahead of all things including each other.  You might think that we should put each other first but I think we put the cause of Jesus first and that is what creates this community.  We find genuine community in our commitment to this great mission. Lastly, we have created a CULTURE that is attractive to leaders.  You've heard the old saying, "birds of a feather flock together"...well, the birds at CCC are eagles.  They are leaders who like to soar high and fast.  Almost everyone on our staff team either came from the marketplace where they made a lot more money or they have been offered positions where they could make more money.  But they chose to be here because there is just something attractive about being a team of high capacity leaders who love each other and love the mission.  When you have a community of people with a clear cause that have created a culture that attracts high capacity leaders, that is hard to beat!

Catalyst Podcast

Got a great opportunity to talk about two of my favorite topics today!  What were the topics?  The reproducing church (like Community Christian Church!) and the the National New Church Conference (a can't miss conference!).  How did this happen?  I was asked to do the December podcast for Catalyst.  Pretty cool, huh?  They told me that they have 13,000 subscribers thru iTunes and about 125,000 that listen monthly.  You kidding me?!?  I seriously can't believe some of the really cool opportunities God is giving me. 

WGN & Steve Cochran - Thanks!

Answering A Multi-Site Church Critique

Every leader knows that one of the surest signs that you are doing something new and creative is the inevitable critique.  Sometimes the critique is fear- based and some times that critique is corrective and helpful. Other times the critique is just uniformed. So whenever you read a critique ask yourself:  Is this fear based?  Is this corrective and helpful?  Or is this just uninformed?                      

                                                                                                                     I just finished an interview with Evan Drake with CoachNet and one of his questions was in response to some of the critique that the multi-site church is receiving.  The following is his question and my quick response.

                                                                                                                                                          

COACHNET:  One of the critiques of the multi-site church is that it does not empower leadership effectively.  How do you respond to this?

                                                                               

DAVE:  My quick response is two-fold?  1. This is a naive critique from people who have only seen one type of multi-site church. 2.  This is a criticism that is coming from someone who does not understand that the whole reproducing (better term) or multi-site church is dependent on leadership and artist development. Without leadership development you can not have a multi-site church.    Let me briefly elaborate on both those points:                                                                                       

1. Unfortunately, when most people think of a multi-site church they think of a large mega church with a charismatic pastor who is shown on video at a variety of locations.  That is just one of about a dozen different variations of multi-site churches.  There are brand new churches that are multi-site from day one.  There are small churches that meet in multiple locations.  There are rural churches that have more than one venue.  There are lots of churches, large and small that use a teaching team.  I have no problem with a mega church using video teaching, but to critique the whole methodology of being a multi-site church based on a narrow slice of the movement is naive and uniformed.  (Did that sound like a rant?  Good!)

                                                                                                                                                   

2. I understand where this critique comes from, but it is has a misunderstand of leadership.  Now, if they want to critique some churches that use video teaching for not developing more and better teachers…they may have a case.  But the two things we have to do well as a multi-site church (after hearing from God) is this: reproduce more and better artists and reproduce more and better leaders.  Artists are those people who either upfront or behind the scenes that make it possible to reproduce more worship services.  Leaders are the ones who provide the care and discipleship for children, students and adults in small groups.  The very possibility of starting a new site is based on having enough artists and enough leaders who are ready to go to the new location and provide the infrastructure of support for that new campus.  Leadership is not only found with the Senior Pastor or senior leadership team.

Chi-Town

Took the whole family and extended family to Chicago yesterday via the train.  For those that work in the city and commute everyday via the Metra this is no big thrill, but for the kids a ride on the train is still a treat.  Our first stop was at a Chicago classic, Lou Mitchell's for breakfast/lunch.  Really good food.  After we stuffed our gut we headed for State Street to look at the Marshall Fields Christmas windows...hold it, Marshall Fields got bought out by some store last year from New York called, Macy's.  So, does this mean that I'm looking at the Macy's Christmas windows?  As a Chicagoan this is very upsetting. Why?  Basically it boils down to resenting anything from New York or LA.  (Blogger note:  I refuse to eat at the California Pizza Kitchen.  Why?  Everyone knows the best pizza in the world is from Chicago and pizza is definitely not southern California!  It's the same reasons Chicagoans have to hate the Yankees.  For those same reason I also resent Macy's buying Marshall Fields and changing the name.)  So, I enjoyed the Christmas windows and while I was there Dad, Jon, Graham, myself and Josh joined a crowd of people who were protesting the change of store name.  That was fun and/or funny.  (Blogger note:  I actually love Manhattan, NYC and plan to be there next week and one of my favorite places to hang out is Orange County, CA.  But if you are from Chicago, you will understand - part of being a Chicagoan is to resent the "second city" title and know that there are some things that are simply better about Chi-Town!)  After a trip down State's Street we headed over to Millennium Park.  Awesome place.  We spent the rest of the day by contributing to the well-being of the U.S. economy by shopping for Christmas.  All and all a really fun day with lots of fun people to which I'm related.

Turkey Trot!

Started Thanksgiving with what should be a new great tradition - the Naperville 5K Turkey Trot!  Me and more than 5,000 of my closest friends. 

The good news - I finished with a pretty good time (for me!).  The bad news - my 13 year old son, Josh beat me and everyone else!  I think this is the first time he has ever beat me at something athletic when I was really trying.  And it was even more fun because I got to run with Jon and a bunch of counsins who were in town:  Brian, Kt (and husband Paul), Sara.

NEW: Reproducing Church Experience

Part of the dream for Community Christian Church and NewThing is to continue to develop a strong pipeline of innovative leaders who dream about the opportunity to be part a of a movement that reproduces at every level:  Christ Followers, leaders, artists, groups, teams, campuses, churches and networks.  It is with that kind of leader in mind, we have been working to develop what we are calling the “Reproducing Church Experience.” This two day event will be held on Monday, January 8th thru Wednesday, January 10th at Community Christian Church.  This will be an interactive experience, where we will walk through and interact on the following:

A Great Church Planting / Reproducing Church Podcast

The 2007 National New Church Conference not only has a great line-up for their conference next April but they are also committed to providing great training via their website: www.exponentialconference.com.  One of the features of the website is a regular podcast that includes a growing list of people from which you definitely want to hear.  Yes, I did the first podcast...but it gets better than that!  The next three podcasts include these leaders:

• Ron Sylvia who is the founding pastor of The Church at the Springs in Ocala, Florida and the author of Starting High Definition Churches.
• Ed Stetzer of www.newchurches.com and author of Breaking The Missional Code and Planting Missional Churches.
• Bob Roberts of Northwoods Church, GlocalNet and author of the forthcoming Glocalization.

These are three of the leading voices in the advancing church planting movement and you definitely want to hear what they have to say.

"Professor Dave?"

Jon and I had a great meeting yesterday with Rick Richardson and Scott Moreau of Wheaton College Graduate School about the possibility of us teaching a course there.  I've known Rick for quite a while.  In addition to being the Director of the Masters in Evangelism and Leadership program he is also the Associate National Director of Evangelism for InterVarsity and the author of ReImagining Evangelism.  (All that sounds impressive, but basically he's just a really great guy who loves God and wants that for other people!)  I wouldn't necessarily be that excited about teaching at a college but several things got me pretty pumped about this possibility:

1. I think this could line up with the vision of the NewThing Network: "to be a catalyst a movement of reproducing churches".  Here is why - they would like us to design a course called Planting Reproducing Churches as a part of the  Masters in Evangelism and Leadership degree.  Think that fits with our vision?  Think Jon and I might be able to get jazzed about that topic?  Duh!
2. Teaching a course at Wheaton Graduate School will give us access to more and better potential church planters who we could enroll in our dream of planting reproducing churches.  And maybe they will plant as a part of the NewThing Network.
3. They are also interested in partnering with CCC and the NewThing Network.  I think this might be of interest to some of our staff and leadership residents because we could potentially create a Masters in Evangelism and Leadership degree program using 28 hours of their core courses and 12 hours that we would design.   And if we get a few people who will do it they will also give us a discount.  Cool.
4. The course is for 2 credit hours and would require about two and half days.  I think that could be worked into my schedule once a year.

This is not a done deal, but it seems that God continues to open up doors of opportunity for us to have a greater influence.  I just need to discern which ones are in alignment with the vision of Community Christian Church and NewThing and which ones are not.

10 Simple (But NOT Easy) Practices For Creating A Leadership Culture

While in San Diego last weekend I met with Alan Nelson, the Executive Editor of REV! Magazine on the topic of leadership development.  His last question was my favorite, "How do you nurture a culture that values and practices leadership development?"  Since my plane was late we didn't get to spend much time on this question so I promised him that I would send him some thoughts.  And since I'm sending them to Alan, I thought I would also give them to you.  So here are 10 Simple (But NOT Easy) Practices For Creating a Leadership Culture:

1. Make sure that leadership development is directly tied to the success of the vision.  I know there is no way that Community Christian Church will ever be a church of 200 locations that has mobilized 100,000 3C Christ Followers without intentional and rigorous attention to leadership development.  I know that our NewThing Network will never catalyze a movement of reproducing churches unless we prioritize leadership development.
2. Give leaders a dream worth sacrificing and trading their lives.  The reason many churches do not attract leaders and in particular high capacity leaders is that the church has not put before them a vision or dream so compelling that they are willing to trade their lives for it.  Leaders want a big hill!
3. Vision casting should include leaders in the details.  When I share the vision of 200 sites in the Chicago area I always say it will come down to two things:  developing more and better artists and developing more and better leaders.  I will also talk about the number of leaders it will take to accomplish this God-sized vision:  small group leaders, ministry team leaders, Kids' City leaders, Student Community leaders, etc.  The trigger point for every new site is the rising up of a leader to become the campus pastor for that location.  Leadership is in the details of the vision.
4. Tell stories of leadership development.  Some of my favorite stories are the stories of some people who are now on our executive leadership team who started at CCC as an apprentice leader in a small group or a Kids' City group.  In time they became a leader of a group; then a coach; soon they transitioned to staff leadership and now they have as much influence at CCC as anyone.  When you tell these stories other leaders think, "maybe I could do that too."
5. Make known your leadership pipeline.  I was at lunch the other day with a high capacity leader and they told me that one day they would like to be on staff at CCC and then asked me how that could happen.  I drew on a napkin the following:  apprentice leader -> leader -> coach -> staff.  That simple explanation is our leadership pipeline.  Some people refer to it as a career path.  I see it as the way that a leader proves their faithfulness and expands their influence.  If you want to create a leadership culture you should be able to write your leadership pipeline on the back of a napkin.
6. Make risk-taking a value.  At CCC risk-taking is not only a value; for us it is a synonym for faith.  And risk-taking is attractive to leaders
7. Success is measured in terms of leadership development.  In the last few years we have developed a tool we call a dashboard.  It comes out once a month and it gives us an update on how the overall church is doing and how each CCC site is doing.  There are about a half dozen key indicators that we watch and one of the most significant indicators is the development of new and emerging leaders.
8. Reward faithful leaders.  We try to reward people who faithfully fulfill their leadership capacity.  There are lots of ways to reward leaders but the best way to reward an emerging leader is with greater influence and responsibility.  This perhaps as much as anything will foster a leadership culture.
9. Use small groups to develop leaders.  Small groups are a great and safe place to take risks on emerging leaders.  It is a great place because the emerging leader knows these people and they are really rooting for him/her and will give them good feedback.  It is a safe place because there are only 6-15 people in a small group. 
10. Have high expectations, but easy entrance into leadership.  Set the bar for leaders really high.  Leaders want to be a part of something that is challenging and exceptional.  But at the same time do not insist that a person has to be around for a long time to move into a leadership role.  If an emerging leader will adhere to the leadership expectations they should be able to move into leadership asap!

I call these "simple" because you just read these ten practices and understood each of them.  However, they are "not easy" because for you to do these ten practices will take rigorous intentionality.   But to do them is worth it!  I love how Carl George once put it to me, "...after hearing from God the most important task of the church is leadership development."

Four Days of Mr. Fix-It...Pray!

I've been on quite a run for the last few weeks with a NewThing Multi-Site Practicum, finishing up the NEXT mission, doing some speaking at conferences and churches and then all the fun that goes with Community Christian Church and the NewThing Network.  So, I'm taking four days off.  For rest and relaxation?  Nope!  A few days to do handyman stuff. Understand, I'm not one of those guys who can just look at something and go, "oh, I see the problem", and then take out the proper tool and fix it.  I am one of those guys who after five unsuccessful attempts reads the directions and then tries five more times unsuccessfully and then finally call his friend who is a handyman to get his "help" in fixing it.   Please pray for me and my house!?!

Dinner with Tommy Barnett

I just got back from being in Los Angeles speaking at the Dream Center and then a couple days in San Diego.  I had a couple of cool things happen in San Diego - I had an interview with Alan Nelson who is the Executive Editor of REV! Magazine on leadership development.  Warren Bird told him that Community Christian Church does a better job of developing leaders than any church in the country.  Not sure we are that good...but thanks for the kudos Warren!  And then I got to spend some time with Paul Engle of Zondervan talking about marketing our upcoming book, The BIG IDEA and the possibility of other books in the next year.  I really want our writing to contribute to our dream of catalyzing a movement of reproducing churches.  If not, I shouldn't do it!

But the highlight of the last three days in southern California was having dinner at Wolfgang Pucks with Tommy Barnett.  Matthew Barnett and Aaron Jayne who were also there are awesome; but there is just something special about hanging out with a guy who pastors one of the largest churches in the country; has been a pastor for over 50 years and still gets it!  Yes, there are a lot of things about him that are "old school".  He still believes in bus ministry and makes it work.  He is still in love with big buildings.  But this guy is so encouraging, so postive and so in love with the church that you can't help but love him!  So, here are a couple topics that we discussed at dinner:

THE POWER OF THE DREAM.

At the age of 69, Tommy has been in the ministry for over 50 years.  Since he is also one of three men (now two since Dobson opted out) who agreed to work in the restoration of Ted Haggard I asked him what he thought was the key to keep from making those kinds of mistakes over a lifetime of ministry.  He told me, "the dream is so compelling to me that keeps me from falling.  I know if I fail like that I will forfeit the chance to see the dream fulfilled that God has given me for my life."  He also said that he had the dream for everything that happened at First Assembly in Phoenix and now the Dream Center in Los Angeles over 50 years ago.  When he talked about it, he said it like he could literally see the details of it years ago.

WHAT MAKES THE DREAM CENTER WORK.

So, after being at the Dream Center and seeing how it works I'm a huge fan.  But it takes over $500,000/month for the Dream Center to work.  And the church that meets at Angelus Temple doesn't pay for this either.  So, I asked Tommy and Matthew how they make it work financially with that size of a deficit every month.  I love the answer. "If you take care of the people that nobody wants, God will send you the people everybody wants."  I'm sure they have said that a hundred times.  But it is true.  Tommy told me, "we believe money follows ministry"  and he also told me "in the last five years I have had 15 people give me $1 million...that never happened before the Dream Center."

A Dream Coming True.

Today I got to see up close a dream in the progress of coming true. 

I was invited by Matthew Barnett to speak to the Dream Center at Angelus Temple in Los Angeles.  The whole experience was phenomenal:  the hospitality by the Dream Center staff was outstanding; the tour of the Dream Center by Matthew and Tommy Barnett was absolutely inspiring; the worship service and chance to speak in front of this church was incredible and going out to dinner with Matthew Barnett, Tommy Barnett and Aaron Jayne was fantastic! 

Over fifty years ago God gave Tommy the dream of starting a church in Los Angeles.  Then, twelve years ago that dream became a reality when Matthew Barnett moved from Phoenix to LA.  They now serve 30,000 people every week through 150 ministries of every kind.  You name a need and they have a ministry or a plan to have a ministry to meet it!  It is staggering.  But even more staggering is the difference they are making in the community!  In the first four years of the Dream Center's establishment prostitution and gang violence dropped 73%; the homicide rate dropped 28% and the number of rapes in the neighborhood dropped by 53%.  Most churches can not prove why they are needed based on those metrics.

I was thinking about words I would use to describe The Dream Center and here are the first three that come to mind:

• SERVING:  From the moment I got picked up at the airport they did everything they could to serve me.  They carried my bag, opened every door, checked me in at the hotel, got me something to eat or drink - it was totally over the top.  And they didn't just treat me that way since I was the guest speaker.  The whole place exemplified extraordinary service from the way they took care of the people in rehab who live at the Dream Center to the way they display the names of newcomers on the screens to say welcome! I was impressed.
• ENCOURAGING - If they said it once, they said it a hundred times (literally) how pleased and honored they were that I would come and speak at the Dream Center.  And it starts with Matthew and Tommy - those guys are two of the most positive people I have ever met.  And it permeates the entire place.  As I was getting a tour of the Dream Center they had people there to greet me and make sure I got a standing ovation.  When they introduced me to speak that evening, they made sure I got a standing ovation.  When I finished they told me over and over again what a great message I delivered.  Truthfully, I thought my talk was pretty good, but not nearly as good as they said.  However, you could tell that they want the Dream Center to be a place where guests come away super encouraged. 
• GENUINE  - The Dream Center is not like any other place and definitely not a copy of any other place.  Matthew and Tommy Barnett are not trying to do or be anything other than what God wants them to be in that place.  It is totally authentic.  The authenticity of the leadership was very attractive. 

It was an amazing experience and I am truly grateful for the opportunity to have been at the Dream Center.  Wow!

CCC - Top 25 Most Innovative Churches

You may remember that last summer we found out that Community Christian Church was listed as the 13th Most Influential Church in the country by a survey conducted by The Church Growth Report.  It was an interesting and fun surprise.  Now, it looks like CCC is going to be on another one of those lists.  Steve Brewer, CCC's IT/Communications guy (and sits next to me at the Yellow Box offices) got an e-mail from Outreach Magazine and they said that Community Christian Church will be listed in their January issue as one of The 25 Most Innovative Churches.  Kinda cool.

City Praying for Pastors

You often hear pastors ask the people in their church to pray for their city; but how often do you hear about the city praying for their pastors? 

Yesterday morning I was meeting with Jon at Starbucks for our weekly one-on-one and in walks Naperville City Manager Peter Burchard.  Peter is a great guy and is always interested in the continuing adventures of Community Christian Church.  So, we told him some of the latest and then he told us about some events in the life of the city.  But before he left he asked, "so how can I pray for you guys?" A couple things came to mind and so I told him.  And then standing right there in Starbucks he says out loud a prayer of blessing and ask God to give us wisdom.  How cool! 

Made Me Laugh.

I'm not usually a big fan of "Christian" t-shirts, but this one made me laugh when I got it as a gift from a CCC'er.  Thanks!

As long as I'm talking about things that make me laugh -- I was getting up to speak at the Yellow Box yesterday and I look over at the front row and three people have signs that read, "DAVE's FAN CLUB".  They were trying to get a laugh...and they did!
